HP®2500TM SERIES GEAR ALIGNMENT If you are experiencing light print or a repetitive print defect on the HP®2500/2550TM color LaserJet printers and cannot solve the problem from the list of usual suspects, check the Transfer Belt Clutch Gears. These color printers work by a carousel process, four toner units on a rotating wheel laying down the image to be printed onto the Transfer Belt. When the clutch gears that run this belt are misaligned, you can end up with light print (see Photo 1). If the clutch gears are even a few teeth off correct alignment you will see a repetitive print defect (see Photo 2). Photo 1 Photo 2 To correct this defect, first remove the drum unit. The Clutch Gears should be in the same position on both sides of the drum. Photo 5 & 6 show the Clutch Gears out of alignment. This typically results in a light print or repetitive defect. Photo 5 Photo 6 Photo 7 illustrates and identifies the Transfer Gears involved in the solution. Holding the drum unit on its side, carefully lift the Mating Gear to allow adjustment of left-side Clutch Gear. WARNING: only lift the Mating Gear enough to clear the Clutch Gear and the Small Mating Gear (see Photo 8) or you will release the Mating Gear Shaft inside the unit and be forced to disassemble the unit to reattach the Shaft to the Mating Gear. Photo 7 Small mating gear for clutch (Mates with clutch gear) Photo 8 Mating gear to clutch gear Clutch gear Lifting the Mating Gear frees the front roller ­ a.k.a. the Clutch Gear Mechanism ­ allowing the Clutch Gears to be moved independently on either side of the Transfer Belt. Push the stops on the Clutch Gears to the top on both sides of the unit. Lower the Mating Gear to mesh with the teeth of the Clutch Gear. Reassemble the Drum Unit, reinstall, and run a test. If the fault persists, disassemble the Drum Unit and repeat the process, moving the Clutch Gear one or two teeth at a time in either direction on the Mating Gear.
