*----====----====----====----====----* Roland Boss DR-110 Dr Rhythm Graphic SERVICE MANUAL DOCUMENTS <------------------------------------> From the DR-110 Information Homepage @ http://members.aol.com/leviathant/dr110.html Since you've taken the time to read this, I'd much appreciate it that if you do some kind of nifty (or even minimal) modification to the DR-110, please email me and let me know what you've done, and if you'd be so kind to provide schemes and/or instructions as a sort of 'thanks for letting me have the DR-110 schemes Matt' kind of gesture. Please send em to [email protected] and let me know if you would mind if I posted them publicly on the same web site that these schemes are available from. Enjoy, happy modding! Oh, here's the parts list, painstakingly hand typed by myself. FEB. 21,1980 1 RS FLIP FLOP (2/4 IC3) (a) PLAY Mode When the START switch S5 is turned ON, the Q cutput goes to H and triggers the Clock Generator (2). Mhen the STOP switch S6 is turned ON, the Q output goes to L and the Clock Generator stops oscillation. At this time, the Q output goes to H and resets the Binary Counter (5) (b) WRITE Mode The Q output goes to H when S5 is turned ON, and goes to L when S6 turned ON. This condition is written in the Memory IC1 as a data. 2 CLOCK GENERATOR (2/4 IC3) This the is The frequency of this oscillator is controlled with TEMPO VR-5. oscillator functions in PLAY mode only, and feeds clock pulses to Counter (5) 3 SCHIMITT TRIGGER (Q15, 17, 18) This circuit functions in WRITE mode only. The collector of Ql5 goes H when either the START switch S5 or the STOP switch S6 is turned ON, and goes to L when the switch set to ON is turned OFF. 4 DELAY CIRCUIT (Q16) The output from the Schmitt circuit (3) is intergrated, and fed to the base of Q16. Then the signal is trimmed to square wave at collector of Ql6. This output signal is differentiated and becomes pulses, and then is applied to the R/~W terminal of IC1. The two pulses lag a little behind edges of Scmitt (3) output pulse. 5 DUAL BINARY COUNTER (IC2) This circuit counts pulses from the clock generator (2) in PLAY mode, and counts pulses from the Schmitt trigger (3) in WRITE mode, and then outputs binary-coded signals from the terminals Ql-Q5; Ql-Q4 denote 16 steps composing each rhythm. Signal from Q5 is applied to A7 only when the VARIATION switch is set to AB. To the terminal A7, the L level voltage is given when the switch is set to A and H when switch is set to B. DR-5 5 6 256 x 4 BIT CMOS MEMORY (IC1) Reading/writing from/to this memory is as described below. The upper 3 bits designate rhythms 1-8, the next one bit designates VARIATION A and B, and. the lower 4 bits 16 steps in one rhythm. In PLAY mode, the terminal CE2 is connected. to the Clock generator output. The memory functions only when the clock is H, and outputs H's or L's from DO 1-4. (When the clock is L, DO 1-4 becomes high impedance.) In WRITE mode, when the terminal R/~W becomes L,a data from the flip flop is written in one of DI 1-4 via Sl.A previously stored data is rewritten from DO via R61-R64 to the remaining three DI's. The Vcc of this rnemory chip is directly connected to the dry cells regardless of power switch positions, since the chip draws only a very slight idling current during stand-by. As a result, the data is guaranteed to be stored as long as the dry cells maintain voltage value higher than a specified. level. The capacitor C39 (22 mfd.) connected to the terminal Vcc can substitute for the dry cells by its charge for several minutes when the cells are absent during replacement. 7 VOlCE GENERATOR (Ql, 2, 3, 7, 8, 9, 10, ll) BD, SD and RS are triggered by pulses from the respective DO's. HI HAT is triggered by pulses from the counter IC2 or the Clock generator IC3 by

Notes on Boss OS-2 schematic ---------------------------- 2nd edition: 7/12/2002 Some errors are corrected; you'll find that the new schematic has some components that have a curved line drawn around them and a triangle with a "2". These are components that were wrongly named and/or valued up until this edition (Probably by copy/paste- and typing mistakes). Changes: OLD -> NEW --------------------------- * R48/100k -> R17-100R * C13/47n -> C29/10n * R50/56k -> R43/1M * C32 -> C31 * C15 -> C14 * C20/10n -> 100n * R29/4k1 -> 4M1 * C8/20p -> 820p I'm really very sorry if any of you have encountered problems due to my typo's. If there are any more comments feel free to send me an e-mail. =============================================== 1st edition: 30/12/2001 Text on my circuit board contains error !!!: 2 transistors are labeled Q6! I renamed the JFET to Q8 (as this number wasn't used). This error might be revised on newer units so watch out: you might need to swap names of Q6 and Q8 in the schematic if you have newer unit !! You can tell the difference by the numbers on them (see below) I don't know which one of the Q6's those guys at Roland would rename in a revision. Additional info on components: ------------------------------ IC1: Mitsubishi M5218AL dual opamp 8-pin SIL Pin4=GND Pin8=9V IC2: JRC 14580 dual opamp 8-pin DIL Pin4=GND Pin8=9V VR2=20kG (A=lin;B=log; but wtf is G???) VR3=270k Stereo pot (no text on pot; value measured with DMM. I also don't know if it's lin or log, but I guess that doesn't really matter since "drive" doesn't count in numbers, right? I'm only kidding. it will of course effect your level of fine-tuning) All VR's and C35 are mounted on a separate "VR-BOARD" connected to the main PCB with a 13wire Flat-Cable. These 13 wires are labeled 4~16.Other cables: 1: Input (grey) 2: PCB GND to input-jack (brown) 3: Adaptor GND to input-jack (black) . . . (4-16 are in flat-cable; see above) . . 17: Battery +9V (red) 18: Cable to Footswitch (purple) 19: Output (white) 20: LED anode (orange) 21: LED kathode (green) Output jack is grounded to pedal body; NOT to PCB. Connection from PCB ground to body is through input-jack-ring (I wouldn't risk it. If you want to build this, i'd recommend connecting the output-jack-ring to PCB as well) All resistors: 0.25Watts 5% All "1 Megaohm" resistors 10% (?) D1: 1N4004 D5: 5.6V Zener D11:Red 3mm LED All other diodes are ordinary switching diodes, I guess. I tested one and it has a regular voltage drop of 0.65 V. Q1,Q7,Q6*: 2SK118Y (N-ch. JFET) Q4: 2SK184GR (N-ch. JFET) Q2,Q3,Q5: 2SC3378GR (NPN) (good replacement: 2SC2240BL) Q8*,Q9: 2SC2458GR (NPN) (good replacement: 2SC2240GR) Difference between 2SC2240's is in hFE-values (BL:hFE=350~700 ; GR:hFE=200~400). (Q6*, Q8*, see top of text.)

Guitar Effects Unit (Octaver-Fuzz) extracted from ETI-Canada, January 1980 +9v 10k 10k 10k + 6.8k 10k - D1 a 100k D2 10k +9v + 1.0uf 680k 560pf Q1 1M + b 1k -9v + IN 1.0uf 270ohms 8.2k 39k Fuzz Struzz S3 1k 820 ohms S2 OUT -9v 9v + On S1 Off 9v + +9v Q1 is MPS6515 DI and D2 are 1N4148 The IC is any lownoise dual op-amp, shown is the 4558. Switching could be improved with a full bypass mod. The GEU is good sounding octave fuzz, with an optional mode of just fuzz. The fuzz is a fully rectified signal and is quite chewy. For some the Fuzz alone might not be loud enough, this can be fixed by raising the value of the 820 ohm resistor and lowering the 39k one. Or one could just replace both with a normal volume pot for a more standard approach. The "struzz" is the fuzz with an octave higher signal mixed in. Good for singal notes and leads.

The distorted tone and the clean tone can be blended together for additional sound tailoring. Also the tone control only affects the distorted signal, and leaves the clean signal untouched. ® NOV 30 1 997 Designed to lower the audio blasting that goes with TV-commercials, the unit also serves as a studio sound manipulator! Stereo Compressor BY JULES RYCKEBUSCH An Audio Compressor is an essential tool for audio processing and it is commonly found in recording studios. Most recording studios have a selection of compressors, each chosen for some specialized feature or nuance. Your home may not be a professional recording studio, but you do need our Stereo Compressor, so read on. As the device's name implies, the POPtronix Stereo Compressor Stereo Compressor compresses or limits the dynamic range of an audio signal. (Make sure you read the sidebar How Compressors Work.) In a recording studio, compressed audio prevents tape-recorder overload during loud passages without losing quiet passages in the noise floor (hiss). Before compressors were invented, the recording engineer would ride the gain by manually adjusting the signal level. www.poptronix.com 1 AUDIO IN VCA AUDIO OUT +V THRESHOLD RECTIFIER LOG CONVERTER SIDECHAIN RETURN Fig. 1. FUNCTIONAL BLOCK DIAGRAM of the Stereo Compressor. Sidechain portions of the diagram may be omitted from the unit's construction. RATIO SIDECHAIN SEND Compressor, you don't need to constantly ride the gain. It will automatically do that for you! When you patch the Stereo Compressor between your hi-fi VCR and your stereo sound svstem, you can enjoy listening to movies late at night in full fidelity, at low volume, without being blasted out of your chair when Rambo raids your living room. You can also use the unit to prevent tape (recording) overload while making home audio recordings. Compressors are commonly used to record vocalists and acoustic instruments, especially those that have large dynamic ranges. Compressed audio can also be used to create artificial effects while recording, such as increasing the apparent sustain of an instrument or completely squashing the level of a signal. We will learn how to accomplish these audio effects later. Compressors can also be abused. Have you ever wondered why TV commercials sound louder than regular TV programming? Well, the producer of the offending TV commercial has used a large amount of compression on the audio tracks and then boosts the gain tojust below distortion level. The end result is an apparent Increase in loudness to the listener. This works because modern TVs and home theaters have a large dynamic range for the audio signal. Film and TV producers take advantage of the dynamic range available to them by recording normal conversation and background sounds 6 to 12 dB below the maximum signal level. Then for dramatic effect, music and sound effects such as explosions can be that much louder than the dialogue track. This is very noticeable when watching a movie on a high-fidelity video tape recorder. In fact, for late-night viewing, when you are trying to be quiet, you have to turn the TV up just to hear the dialogue and then quickly turn
