How to replace the LCD screen on a Creative Jukebox 3

How to replace the LCD screen on a Creative Jukebox 3

Acknowledgements
Thanks to Bill Scoville for describing the process, and to all the NJB crowd at Jumping
Cholla.

Introduction
This procedure applies to a Jukebox 3, however the same LCD screen is used in the Jukebox
1 and 2, so the method should be similar.
The screen in my JB3 broke when I dropped the unit onto the floor. The edge of the screen is
not supported particularly well, and one of the corners cracked. You can see the damage in
Figure 7 on page 7.

Warning
Although you do not need any special tools or skills to complete this procedure, you should
be aware of the following:
1 Remember to discha rge a ll sta tic electricity from yourself. Touch a wa ter pipe or
ta p/ fa ucet before before opening up the JB3.
2 The LCD screen is a delica te component. Be ca reful not to drop it or put stress on the
da ta ca ble.
3 You perform this procedure entirely a t your own risk. It worked for me; it ma y not work
for you.

What you will need
· A sma ll Phillips hea d/ sta r screwdriver
· A sma ll, fla t-bla ded jeweller's screwdriver
· A bowl for the screws a nd rubber feet (they a re sma ll a nd ea sy to lose)
· A cra ft or hobby knife with a long, thin bla de
· Cra ft glue (not superglue - it's too strong)
· Some non-slip foa m, or something soft to support the JB3
· A working LCD screen (displa y) suita ble for a JB1, JB2 or JB3.

O verview
The ma in sta ges of this procedure a re:
· Disa ssembling the JB3
· Removing the LCD screen from the ba cking pla te
· Disconnecting the da ta ca ble
· Removing the screen
· Pra ctice: repla cing the screen
· Re-inserting the da ta ca ble
· Finishing up a nd rea ssembling the JB3

Disassembling the JB3
4 Remove the ba ttery or ba tteries from the JB3, or disconnect the power ca ble.
5 Disconnect a ny other ca bles from the JB3.
6 Remove the fa cepla ce from the front of the JB3 by ca refully levering it off from the
thumbhole, a t [A] in Figure 1. The da ma ge to my JB3 is pla in: you ca n only see the
top-right pa rt of the screen is working

Note It helps if you pla ce the JB3 on a non-slip surfa ce. In the picture below
[B] I used a piece of non-slip foa m. This both protects the JB3's cover
from being scra tched, a nd stops it from sliding a round the ta ble.

Figure 1: JB3 with faceplate removed. The problem with the screen is highlighted.

7 Turn the JB3 over, a nd pull out the rubber feet. Put the feet into a bowl - they a re
sma ll a nd ea sy to lose!
8 Remove the screws (4 in tota l) from under the rubber feet. Put these into the bowl.
9 Remove the fina l screw from nea r the top of the ba ttery compa rtment.
10 Hold the top a nd bottom ha lves of the JB3 together, a nd turn it over, so tha t the
screen side is uppermost.
11 Ca refully pull the top cover off, a nd put it a side.

Removing the LCD screen from the backing plate
12 In a new JB3, the LCD screen is held onto the support, or ba cking, pla te, by 3 strips
of flexible glue (the sa me type tha t is used to stick CDs to maga zine covers).
In Figure 2 the 3 glue strips a re shown a s bla ck lines [A]. To remove the screen, you
ha ve to cut through the glue.

Figure 2: Glue location

Also in Figure 2, note the following:
· [B] points to a meta l lip tha t surrounds the side a nd bottom of the screen.
· [C] a nd [D] point to the best pla ces to insert the cra ft knife to cut the glue.

13 Using a cra ft knife with a long, thin bla de, very ca refully push through or cut the glue.
I used a Swiss Army Knife, a s I did not ha ve a cra ft knife. This worked quite well, a s
the bla de wa s rigid, but the bla de wa s a little too thick.
Another method you could use is to insert the bla de a t the bottom of the screen a nd
very gently push in different directions in order to prise the screen a wa y from the
ba cking pla te, a s shown in Figure 3.

Note Don't lift the bla de up - just push it in, in different directions. O nce the
glue is cut, you should be a ble to lift the screen up without a ny force

14 O nce the screen is loose, turn it over, using the da ta cable a s a hinge (a s is shown in
Figure 2)

Disconnecting the data cable
15 To disconnect the da ta ca ble, use a sma ll, fla t-bla ded screwdriver to flick open the
da ta ca ble connector, a s shown in Figure 4.

The brown locking cla mp will open if you lever the end of the cla mp [A] open.

Removing the screen
16 Figure 5 shows how the da ta ca ble sits undernea th the ba cking pla te.

17 To remove the da ta ca ble, turn the JB3 a round so tha t the screen is nea rest to you,
then use a pa ir of tweezers to gently wiggle the ca ble until it slides out, a s shown in
Figure 6.

look much worse tha n this!

Practice: replacing the screen
Now that you have removed the damaged screen, try re-installing it. This section will show
you how.

Why? This gives you some practice fiddling with the screen, as the most difficult part is
getting the data cable underneath the backing plate and in the correct position to close the
data cable connector.

Since you will practise with the damaged screen, you can perfect your technique before
installing the new screen!

Re-inserting the data cable
19 In Figure 8, notice how the ba cking pla te presses a ga inst the integra ted circuit [A].
This ma kes inserting the da ta ca ble a little difficult.

20 Figure 9 shows how the da ta ca ble will be la id out undernea th the ba cking pla te.
Note tha t the end of the da ta ca ble should sit nea tly in the 'ja ws' of the da ta ca ble
connector.

Figure 9: Data cable layout

21 Slide the ca ble in on a n a ngle, a s show in Figure 10.

22 Slide the ca ble in a nd out a nd move it towa rds the right-ha nd side of the ba cking
pla te.

Re-connecting the data cable
23 This is proba bly the most critica l pa rt of the entire opera tion. Turn the JB3 a round
a ga in, a nd push the screen a nd ca ble slightly a wa y from you, a s shown in Figure 12.
The end of the da ta ca ble [A] must fit tightly into the 'ja ws' of the da ta ca ble
connector.

Figure 12: Correctly re-inserting the data cable

24 Press the top 'ja w' of the da ta ca ble connector down to lock the ca ble into pla ce.
25 O nce you a re confident with this process, repea t it using your new LCD screen.

Finishing up
26 Squeeze a few drops of cra ft glue onto the ba cking pla te, a nd lower the new screen.
You do not wa nt to perma nently bond the screen a nd ba cking pla te together, so don't
use a lot of glue.
27 Before you repla ce the top cover, insert a ba ttery or connect the JB3 to a power
supply, a nd turn it on. You should see something like Figure 13:

Figure 13: A JB3 with a working screen!

28 Repla ce the top cover of the JB3. The power switch might fa ll out, so ma ke sure tha t it
is in its proper position.
29 Turn the JB3 over, a nd insert a ll the screws.

It is importa nt to ma ke the cover of the JB3 go ba ck together tightly, so tighten ea ch
screw slightly, then check tha t the top a nd bottom covers a re a ligned correctly, then
tighten ea ch screw a ga in.
30 Pick up the JB3 a nd look a t it edge-on. Squeeze the top a nd bottom covers together
slightly. If the screws a re tight enough, you should not be a ble to see a ny movement
in the covers.

Congratulations!
You've just sa ved yourself the cost of repla cing your JB3.
