This document shows how to decipher WD internal drive
model numbers issued prior to December 2005, retail 1 WD
Western Digital
channel model numbers issued between June 2005 and
July 2009, and legacy order numbers issued prior to June 2 Capacity
2005. In most cases, the legacy model and order numbers 2, 3, or 4 digits

reference end of life products no longer covered by the

A 5400 RPM (multi-platter)
Model Number System - Distribution and OEM B 7200 RPM with 2 MB cache
Channels (Prior to December 2005) C 10,000 RPM
D 4500 RPM
Internal Hard Drives E 5400 RPM (single platter)
The base model number is composed of four sections: F 10,000 RPM with 2 MB cache
G 10,000 RPM with 8 MB cache
1. Company initials (WD) H 10,000 RPM with 4 MB cache
2. Capacity (GB) J 7200 RPM with 8 MB cache
3. RPM/buffer size or attribute K 7200 RPM with 16 MB cache (Desktop)
L 7200 RPM (Quiet Drive)
4. Interface M 5400 RPM (fluid dynamic bearings
