Precautions
EchoLife HG520v Home Gateway (hereinafter referred to as the HG520v) is designed for indoor use only. Pay attention to the following when installing and using the HG520v. Basic requirements Read this manual carefully before installing and using the equipment. Take waterproof measures during storage, transportation, and operation of the equipment. Avoid collision during storage, transportation, and operation of the equipment. Do not dismantle the equipment by yourself. In case of failure, send the equipment to an authorized maintenance personnel. Without prior written consent from Huawei, no company or individual is allowed to decompile, disassemble, modify or reverse engineer the equipment and shall be solely responsible for any effect resulted from such action. While using the equipment, observe related laws and regulations, and respect the legal rights of others. Environmental Requirements Place the equipment in a well-ventilated place. Avoid direct irradiation of any strong light (such as sunlight). Keep the equipment clean. Place the equipment on a flat and stable platform which is beyond the reach of children. Do not put heavy objects on the equipment.
Leave at least 10 cm space around the equipment for heat dissipation. Do not put the equipment on any object that is flammable or not transcalent, such as foam and rubber. Do not cover the equipment with any object or block the ventilation holes of the equipment. Keep the equipment away from any heat source or exposed fire, such as an electronic warmer and a candle. Keep the equipment away from appliances with a strong electric field or magnetic field, such as a microwave oven and a refrigerator. Keep the equipment away from moisture or containers with liquid, such as a vase and a cup. Usage Do not allow children to use the equipment without guidance. Do not allow children to touch or play with the small fittings, to avoid danger of deglutition. Use only the power adapter provided with the equipment. Use the accessories approved by the manufacturer. The power supply must meet the equipment specifications. Before plugging or unplugging the cables, turn off the equipment and unplug the power supply. While plugging or unplugging the cables, keep your hands dry and do not touch the metallic part of a cable. Do not trample on, stretch, or over bend the equipment cables, to avoid equipment failure. Do not use broken or worn wires. If a wire is broken or worn, contact your supplier for a replacement.
In a lightning storm, turn off the equipment and unplug the power supply, to avoid lightning strike. Unplug the power supply if the equipment is not used for a long time. In case of exceptions, turn off the equipment and unplug the power supply immediately. Contact your supplier for maintenance. For example, if the equipment emits smoke, peculiar smell, or exceptional sounds. Cleaning Before cleaning the equipment, turn off the equipment and unplug the power supply. Clean the equipment shell with a piece of soft cloth. Do not spray liquid onto the equipment, to avoid damage to the internal circuit. Keep the power socket clean and dry, to avoid electric shock or other dangers.

Chapter 1 Introduction
Thank you for purchasing the EchoLife HG520v Home Gateway (Hereinafter referred to as the HG520v). The HG520v is a VDSL2 wireless gateway designed for family users, and small office/home office (SOHO) users. The HG520v supports wired or wireless Internet access, enabling you to enjoy quality audio, data, and video services at a high speed. This manual describes the installation, configuration and maintenance of the HG520v.
1.1 Features
High rate VDSL2 A high performance network process of the VDSL2 router is integrated into the HG520v. Therefore, the HG520v can provide VDSL2 connection at a transmission rate higher than ADSL2+ connection. Agile QoS The flexible and efficient quality of service (QoS) strategy ensures the smooth provisioning of various services in different network applications. This helps to bring quality video and audio experiences to end users.
1.2 Network Applications
The HG520v is customer premises equipment (CPE) in the user access layer of a broadband network. Connecting to the digital subscriber line access

multiplexer (DSLAM) and the broadband remote access server (BRAS), the HG520v provides channels for transmitting data, voice and video traffic for terminals like IP set-top boxes (STBs), PCs, and integrated access devices (IADs). Figure 1-1 shows the HG520v network application.

Table 1-2 Interface descriptions Port/Button VDSL Description It is connected to the telephone jack on the wall or the modem port of a splitter. Press RESET to reset and restart the HG520v. RESET Press and hold RESET for 3 seconds to restore the default settings. Caution: Once you restore the default settings, all custom data will be lost. They are Ethernet ports connecting to other network devices (such as a computer, an STB or a hub). You can establish four Ethernet links at the same time. ON/OFF POWER Antenna It is used to power on/off the HG520v. It is a port connecting to the power adapter. It is used to connect the HG520v to WLAN terminals.

Note: The shell of the HG520v may be hot after the device is running for a long time. This is normal and you do not have to worry about it.

Chapter 2 Installation
2.1 Connecting the Cables
The telephone line, the network cable, and the power adapter are used to connect the HG520v to the telephone jack, the power socket, and the computer/the network. The following section describes the connection procedure.
Caution: Before connecting the cables, power off the computers, hubs/switches, and the HG520v.
I. Connecting the Telephone Line Connect one end of the telephone line to the VDSL port of the HG520v. Connect the other end of the telephone line to the telephone jack on the wall (or the Modem port of the splitter).

II. Connecting the Network Cable Connect one end of the network cable to the port of a hub/switch or the Ethernet interface of a computer. Connect the other end of the network cable to the LAN interface of the HG520v. III. Connecting the Power Supply Connect one end of the power adapter to the POWER jack of the HG520v. Connect the other end of the power adapter to the power socket. IV. Switching On the Devices Press the Power button on the rear panel to switch on the HG520v and start the computer, the hub/switch, and other devices.
2.2 Setting Up the Configuration Environment
2.2.1 Planning the Parameters

2.2.2 Logging In to the Configuration Page
Before logging in to the configuration page, disable the proxy server on the PC. The following is an example for doing this in Internet Explorer (IE) 6.0: 1) 2) 3) Start the IE. Select Tools > Internet Options... to display the Internet Options dialog box. Select the Connections tab. Click LAN Settings.... Deselect Use a proxy server for your LAN (The settings will not apply to dial-up or VPN connections). After disabling the proxy server, you can log in to the configuration page as follows: 4) 5) Start the IE. Enter http://192.168.1.1 (the default IP address of the HG520v) in the address bar and press Enter. The login window is displayed. 6) Enter the user name and the password of the administrator. If you pass the authentication, the IE displays the homepage of the Web configuration manager, as shown in Figure 2-1.

To access the operation area of a specific function, click the link to that function on the navigation tree. For detailed descriptions, refer to Chapter 3 "ATM Mode Configuration", Chapter 5 "Advanced Configuration", and Chapter 6 "Wireless Configuration".
Note: The web pages shown in this manual are only for your reference. If any problem occurs in the configuration process, contact your Internet service provider (ISP).

Chapter 3 ATM Mode Configuration
3.1 About ATM Modes
HG520v supports two ATM modes. They are: ATM Route mode ATM Simple Bridge mode The following section describes the configuration of the two ATM modes, including PPPoE, PPPoA, MER, IPoA and Bridge in the ATM Route mode, and the ATM Simple Bridge mode.
3.2 Configuring ATM Route PPPoE
In the PPPoE mode, the HG520v dials numbers by using the built-in PPP dial-up software. It connects your PC to the network, just like a router.
3.2.1 Preparation
1) Get the necessary information listed in the following table.

Set up the configuration environment. For details, refer to 2.2 "Setting Up the Configuration Environment". Click Advanced Setup > Traffic Mode in the navigation tree. Select ATM Route mode and click Save/Apply.
3.2.2 Configuring WAN Parameters
Select Advanced Setup > WAN in the navigation tree and click Add. Follow the steps to establish the PPPoE connection. I. Configuring ATM PVC 1) 2) 3) 4) Enter the VPI/VCI provided by the ISP. Select a service category from the drop-down list. If needed, select Enable Quality of Service. Click Next.

Note: If you select Enable Quality of Service and save the settings, the link to QoS will be displayed in the navigation tree after reboot.
II. Configuring Connection Type and Encapsulation Mode 1) 2) 3) 4) Select PPP over Ethernet (PPPoE). Select an encapsulation mode provide by the ISP. If needed, select Enable 802.1q. Enter the VLAN ID provided by the ISP. Click Next.
III. Configuring PPP User Name and Password 1) 2) 3) 4) Enter the PPP user name and the PPP password provided by the ISP. Enter the PPPoE service name provided by the ISP. If the ISP does not provide any PPPoE service name, skip this item. Select the authentication method provided by the ISP. Click Next.
IV. Configuring WAN Service 1) Select Enable WAN Service. Only when the WAN service is enabled can the HG520v work normally in the route mode. 2) 3) Enter the service name. (You can name it as you like.) Click Next.

V. Checking WAN Setup Summary The summary page lists all the parameters set in the previous steps. Make sure that the parameters are consistent with those provided by the ISP. The network address translation (NAT) function is enabled by default. It is not shown in the configuration process to avoid being disabled. After verifying all the parameters, click Save.
3.2.3 Configuring LAN Parameters
1) 2) 3) 4) Select Advanced Setup > LAN in the navigation tree. Set the primary IP address and the subnet mask of the HG520v. Select Enable DHCP Server and configure the relevant parameters. If needed, select Configure the secondary IP Address and Subnet Mask for LAN Interface. Then, configure the secondary IP address and subnet mask for LAN. 5) Click Save.
Note: The dynamic host configuration protocol (DHCP) server allocates IP addresses to the computers in the LAN.

3.2.4 Configuring Your Computer
Configure your computer to auto obtain the IP address, the gateway address, and the address of the domain name server (DNS). These addresses are allocated by the HG520v automatically. The configuration of the ATM route PPPoE mode is completed.
3.3 Configuring ATM Route PPPoA
In the PPPoA mode, the HG520v dials numbers by using the built-in PPP dial-up software. It connects your PC to the network, just like a router.
3.3.1 Preparation
1) Get the necessary information listed in the following table.

Set up the configuration environment. For details, refer to 2.2 "Setting Up the Configuration Environment". Click Advanced Setup > Traffic Mode in the navigation tree. Select ATM Route mode and click Save/Apply.
3.3.2 Configuration Method
Configure the ATM route PPPoA mode in the same way as for the PPPoE mode. Only the following parameters are different: In the Connection Type page, select PPP over ATM (PPPoA). In the Connection Type page, there is no Enable 802.1q option, and you need not set the VLAN ID. In the PPP Username and Password page, there is no PPPoE Service Name text box. For other configuration steps, refer to 3.2 "Configuring ATM Route PPPoE".
3.4 Configuring ATM Route MER
MAC Encapsulation Routing (MER) is a technology enabling the transference of Ethernet packets over ATM.
3.4.1 Preparation
1) Get the necessary information listed in the following table.

3.4.2 Configuring WAN Parameters
Select Advanced Setup > WAN in the navigation tree and click Add. Follow the steps to establish the MER connection.

Only when the WAN service is enabled can the HG520v work normally in the route mode. 4) 5) Enter the service name. (You can name it as you like.) Click Next.

V. Checking WAN Setup Summary The summary page lists all the parameters set in the previous steps. Make sure that the parameters are consistent with those provided by the ISP. After verifying all the parameters, click Save.
3.4.3 Configuring LAN Parameters

4.1 About PTM Modes
HG520v supports three PTM traffic modes. They are: PTM VLAN mode PTM Protocol mode PTM Simple Bridge mode The following section describes the configuration of the three PTM modes, including PPPoE, IPoE, bridge in the PTM VLAN mode, PPPoE and IPoE in the PTM Protocol mode, and the PTM Simple Bridge mode.
4.2 Configuring PTM VLAN PPPoE
In the PPPoE mode, the HG520v dials numbers by using the built-in PPP dial-up software. It connects your PC to the network, just like a router.

4.3.4 Configuring Terminal Devices
I. Configuring Your Computer Configure your computer to auto obtain the IP address, the gateway address, and the address of the domain name server (DNS). These addresses are allocated by the HG520v automatically. II. Configuring Other Terminal Devices Take the IPTV terminal as an example. If the DHCP server function is not enabled for the secondary LAN interface, you need allocate a static IP address to the IPTV terminal. If the DHCP server function is enabled for the secondary LAN interface, the IPTV terminal can obtain an IP address through the DHCP server.

The following conditions must be satisfied for the IPTV terminal to obtain the secondary IP address of the HG520v: OPTION 60 is defined on the IPTV terminal. The value of OPTION 60 must be identical to the DHCP Class Identifier set on the HG520v. Only if the conditions are both satisfied can the HG520v allocate the secondary IP address for LAN. Otherwise, the primary IP address is allocated, such as 192.168.x.x by default.
4.4 Configuring PTM Protocol PPPoE
4.4.1 Preparation

5.1 Configuring WAN
Select Advanced Setup > WAN in the navigation tree to display the status of the existing WAN interface. To configure the WAN interface, click Add or Edit. For more information, refer to Chapter 3 "ATM Mode Configuration" and Chapter 4 "PTM Mode Configuration". To delete an existing interface, select the Remove check box and click Remove.
5.2 Configuring LAN
Select Advanced Setup > LAN in the navigation tree to display the LAN status.

The LAN IP address of HG520V is predefined before launching. You can change the LAN IP address, the subnet mask and the IGMP Snooping mode. You can also decide whether to enable the DHCP service. If you click Save, the changes are saved in the random-access memory (RAM), and they are not validated at once. If you click Save/Reboot, the HG520v is rebooted and the changes are validated.
5.3 Configuring NAT
Select Advanced Setup > NAT in the navigation tree. Then you can configure the virtual server, the port triggering and the demilitarized zone (DMZ) host.
Note: The link to NAT is displayed in the navigation tree only when there is an interface working in the non-bridging mode and the NAT service is enabled.
5.3.1 Configuring Virtual Server
I. Function The virtual server can redirect the information from the WAN interface to a server with a private IP address inside the LAN. In general, servers inside the LAN are not reachable from an external network. The virtual server function can redirect an external service request to a specified

server inside the LAN. In this way, the servers inside the LAN can also provide services to an external network. For example, you can set up FTP servers and Web servers, and allow service requests from the Internet to access these servers. The HG520v identifies the request from an external network by its protocol type and port number. If you want to direct the request to a different port of the server inside the LAN, you can specify the port number. That is, you can define the conversion rule. You can define a maximum of 32 port conversion rules. II. Configuration Method Click Add to add a conversion rule. Table 5-1 lists the related parameters. Generally, the range of the internal port number can be the same as that range of the external port number. To save the configuration information, click Save/Apply. 5.3.2 Configuring Port Triggering
I. Function Some ports must be opened on the firewall of the router, to enable remote access to some applications. The Port Triggering function opens necessary ports dynamically when an application inside the LAN tries to set up a TCP/UDP connection with an external application. You can define a maximum of 32 port triggering rules, allowing the applications in WAN to connect with the applications that enable Open Ports in LAN. II. Configuration Method Click Add to add a port triggering rule. Table 5-2 lists the related parameters. I. Function The DMZ host provides service for untrustworthy connections from external networks. It is a buffer between the insecurity system and the security system. If a request from a WAN port is not included in the port conversion rule list of the Virtual Server, the HG520v redirects it to the DMZ Host. II. Configuration Method To activate the DMZ function, enter the IP address of the DMZ host and click Save/Apply. 5.4 Configuring Security
Select Advanced Setup > Security in the navigation tree. There are three security functions: IP filtering, MAC filtering and parental control.
5.4.1 Configuring IP Filtering
IP filtering functions include outgoing IP filtering and incoming IP filtering. I. Configuring Outgoing IP Filtering By default, the HG520v allows all data to be transmitted from inside the LAN to the external network. Outgoing IP filtering is used to block some of outgoing data.
Note: The link to IP Filtering is displayed in the navigation tree only when there is an interface working in the non-bridging mode and the firewall is enabled.
Click Add to set an outgoing IP filter. You can set a maximum of 32 filtering rules. For each rule, you need define its name and at least one condition for identifying the outgoing IP traffic. If there are multiple conditions in a rule, all of them must be satisfied for the rule to take effect. To save the configuration information, click Save/Apply. To delete an existing rule, select the Remove check box and click Remove.

II. Configuring Incoming IP Filtering When the firewall is enabled, all data from the WAN are blocked by default. Incoming IP filtering is to allow some of incoming data to be transmitted through the firewall. Click Add to set an incoming IP filter. You can set a maximum of 32 filtering rules. For each rule, you need to define its name and at least one condition for identifying the incoming IP traffic. If there are multiple conditions in a rule, all of them must be satisfied for the rule to take effect. To save the configuration information, click Save/Apply. To delete an existing rule, select the Remove check box and click Remove.
5.4.2 Configuring MAC Filtering
Note: Only when the HG520v works in the bridging mode is the MAC filtering function validated. Then the link to MAC filtering is displayed in the navigation tree.

5.4.3 Configuring Parental Control
The parental control function can restrict the time for the LAN device to connect to the HG520v. You can set a maximum of 16 rules. Click Add to set a rule. Table 5-4 lists the related parameters.. Item Time
Description The time for restricting the connection. It is based on the Internet time rather than the local time. For configuration method, refer to 7.2.3 "Configuring Internet Time".
Note: To query the MAC address of the computer where the Windows operating system resides, run ipconfig/all in the DOS command window.

5.5 Configuring Quality of Service
Quality of service (QoS) is a mechanism ensuring the expected bandwidth for certain services, while controlling delay, jitter and packet loss rate under the actual network conditions. QoS includes IP Precedence, IP TOS and IEEE 802.1P modes. By separating service data streams according to one or more rules, QoS can provides services of certain quality levels. If you select Enable Quality of Service and save the settings, the link to QoS will be displayed in the navigation tree after reboot. To configure QoS, follow these steps:

Select Advanced Setup > Quality of Service in the navigation tree. Click Add to configure QoS and create a traffic classification rule.
For each stream of uplink data, the HG520v converts the related field (TOS, Precedence or DSCP) in its IP packet header into a predefined string according to the rules. The predefined string specifies the priority for forwarding the data. For each rule, you need define its name and at least one condition. If there are multiple conditions, all of them must be satisfied for the rule to take effect. To save the configuration information, click Save/Apply. To delete an existing rule, select the Remove check box and click Remove.
5.6 Configuring Routing
Select Advanced Setup > Routing in the navigation tree. You need configure the default gateway, the static route and the routing information protocol (RIP). I. Configuring Default Gateway If Enable Automatic Assigned Default Gateway is selected, the HG520v obtains the gateway information from any activated PPPoA/PPPoE or MER/DHCP interface. If Enable Automatic Assigned Default Gateway is not selected, enter the default gateway or select a WAN interface. You can also enter a default gateway and select a WAN interface at the same time. Click Save/Apply to save the configuration information.

II. Configuring Static Route Click Add to establish a static route. You can configure a maximum of 32 routes. Enter the destination network address, the subnet mask, the default gateway or select a WAN interface. You can also enter a default gateway and select a WAN interface at the same time. To save the configuration information, click Save/Apply. To delete an existing rule, select the Remove check box and click Remove. III. Configuring RIP RIP is set for routing information exchange in the network of small and medium enterprises. To configure the RIP, follow these steps: 1) Configure a single port. Select the required RIP versi
