Introduction
Congratulations on purchasing your Cisco Small Business W VC210 Wireless-G PTZ Internet Camera. Cisco is the leader in Wi-Fi certified Internet cameras, and the Cisco W VC210 Netw ork Camera is part of the largest portfolio of Wi-Fi certified cameras in the marketplace. The Cisco WVC210 Wireless-G PTZ Internet Video Camera sends live video through the Internet to a w eb brow ser any w here in the w orld. The camera supports dual codecs (MPEG-4 and MJPEG), w hich can be used simultaneously. MPEG-4 gives efficient bandw idth consumption w ith good-quality compression and is optimal for real-time view ing of video. MJPEG gives optimal video quality, making it ideal for large-volume storage to a netw ork attached storage (NAS) device. The Cisco WVC210's audio capabilities include tw o-w ay audio, an embedded microphone, external speaker and microphone ports, and voice compression. With extensive support for features such as IP multicast, Real Time Streaming Protocol (RTSP), Real Time Protocol (RTP), and 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP), it enables video to be view ed from multiple endpoints and client applications, such as 3G phones and QuickTime clients on PCs or Wi-Fi phones. Netw ork protocols such as 802.1p priority, 802.1Q VLANs, and Dynamic DNS (DDNS) are also supported. The pan/ tilt and digital zoom functions allow you to remotely control the camera's movement and zoom, giving you maximum remote flexibility. Up to 10 simultaneous unicast users can access the camera at any time. Video monitoring softw are is included for monitoring multiple cameras and recording to your hard drive, w ith advanced search by time and date. Planning Your Wireless Network
Careful planning is required for a w ireless netw ork, to ensure that your users can access the netw ork resources that they need and to ensure that intruders are kept out. This chapter includes the follow ing sections: · · · Ad-Hoc and Infrastructure Modes, page 4 Wireless Network Layout, page 5 Security Threats Facing Wireless Networks, page 6

Ad-Hoc and Infrastructure Modes
A w ireless local area netw ork (WLAN) is exactly like a regular local area netw ork (LAN), except that each computer in the WLAN uses a w ireless device to connect to the netw ork. Computers and other devices, such as peripherals, in a WLAN share the same frequency channel and SSID, w hich is an identification name for w ireless devices. Unlike w ired netw orks, w ireless netw orks have tw o different modes in w hich they may be set up : infrastructure and ad-hoc. · Infrastructure mode--The WLAN and w ired LAN communicate through an access point. Choose this mode if the w ireless netw ork needs to share data or peripherals, such as printers, w ith a w ired netw ork. The basis of infrastructure mode centers around an access point, w hich serves as the main point of communications in a w ireless netw ork. (A w ireless router can also be used because a w ireless router incorporates the capabilities of an access point.) Access points transmit data to PCs equipped w ith w ireless netw ork cards, w hich can roam w ithin a certain radial range of the access point. Multiple access points can be arranged to w ork in succession to extend the roaming range, and can be set up to communicate w ith your Ethernet (w ired) hardw are as w ell.

·

Ad-hoc mode--Wireless computers communicate directly w ith one another. Choose this mode if your w ireless netw ork does not require access to data or peripherals on a w ired netw ork. If the w ireless netw ork is relatively small and needs to share resources only w ith the other computers on the w ireless netw ork, then ad-hoc mode can be used. Ad-hoc mode allow s computers equipped w ith w ireless transmitters and receivers to communicate directly w ith each other, eliminating the need for an access point. The draw back of this mode is that w ireless-equipped computers are not able to communicate w ith computers on a w ired netw ork. And, of course, communication betw een the w irelessequipped computers is limited by the distance and interference directly betw een them.

Wireless Network Layout
The Cisco W VC210 Internet camera is compatible w ith all 802.1 1g and 802.1 1n routers, such as model number WRVS4400N, as w ell as all 802.1 1g access points, including model number WAP4410N. The camera can also communicate w ith netw ork adapters, such as the Wireless-G Notebook Adapter (model number WPC4400N) for your laptop computers, Wireless-G PCI Adapter (model numbers WMP200) for your desktop PCs, and Wireless-G USB Adapter (model number WUSB200) for your computers that connect to the w ireless netw ork through USB modems. With these, and many other Cisco products, your netw orking options are limitless. Go to the Cisco w ebsite at w w w.cisco.com for more information about Cisco products.

NOTE Your w ireless range is variable and depends on your environment.

Security Threats Facing Wireless Networks
Cisco w ants to make w ireless netw orking as safe and easy for you as possible. The current generation of Cisco products provide several netw ork security features, but they require specific action on your part for implementation. So, keep the follow ing suggestions in mind w henever you are setting up or using your w ireless netw ork. Also see Setting Security Precautions on the Cisco W VC210, page 70. Wireless netw orks are easy to find. Hackers know that in order to join a w ireless netw ork, w ireless netw orking products first listen for "beacon messages." These messages can be easily decrypted and contain much of the netw ork's information, such as the netw ork's SSID (Service Set Identifier). Here are the steps you can take to prevent intruders: Change the administrator's passw ord regularly--With every w ireless netw orking device you use, keep in mind that netw ork settings (SSID, WEP keys, etc.) are stored in its firmw are. Your netw ork administrator is the only person w ho can change netw ork settings. If a hacker learns the administrator's passw ord, he, too, can change those settings. So, make it harder for a hacker to get that information. Change the administrator's passw ord regularly. SSID--There are several things to keep in mind about the SSID: · · · Do not broadcast it Make it unique Change it often

Most w ireless netw orking devices w ill give you the option of broadcasting the SSID, meaning that the SSID can be seen by anyone w ho is scanning for an available w ireless netw ork. While this option may be more convenient for your users, it is also convenient for hackers. So, don't broadcast the SSID. Wireless netw orking products come w ith a default SSID set from the factory. (The Cisco default SSID is "ciscosb".) Hackers know these defaults and can use them to find your netw ork, even if you are not broadcasting the SSID. Change your SSID to something unique and that does not identify your company or the netw orking products you use. Change your SSID regularly so that any hackers w ho have gained access to your w ireless netw ork w ill have difficulty finding it again.

2

MAC Addresses--Enable MAC Address filtering. MAC addresses are unique identification numbers that are assigned to a device at the factory. MAC Address filtering allow s you to provide access only to devices that you specify. This feature makes it harder for a hacker to access your netw ork w ith a random MAC Address. WEP Encryption--Wired Equivalent Privacy (WEP) is an older encryption method that is not considered to be secure and can easily be broken. Select this option only if you need to allow access to devices that do not support WPA or WPA2. If you must use WEP take the follow ing precautions to make a hacker's job more , difficult: · · · Use the highest level of encryption possible Use "Shared Key " authentication Change your WEP key regularly

WPA/ WPA2 Personal--WPA stands for Wi-Fi Protected Access, w hich is a security standard stronger than WEP encryption. A netw ork encrypted w ith WPA/ WPA2 is more secure than a netw ork encrypted w ith WEP because WPA/ WPA2 , uses dynamic key encryption. To protect the information as it passes over the airw aves, you should enable the highest level. WPA/ WPA Enterprise--Enterprise refers to using RADIUS server for authentication, w hile RADIUS stands for Remote Authentication Dial-In User Service. This type of authentication requires some advanced expertise because it involves setting up a RADIUS server for authentication and, in some cases, creation of certificates for both the RADIUS server and the camera. If you are using WPA/ WPA2 Enterprise security, you w ill need to upload security certificates to the camera. Certificates must be in the follow ing format: · · Root certificate: DER encoded binary x.509 (CER/ PEM) User certificate: Personal Information Exchange (PKCS#12(.PFX))

Implementing encryption may have a negative impact on your netw ork's performance, but if you are transmitting sensitive data over your netw ork, encryption should be used. These security recommendations should help keep your mind at ease w hile you are enjoying the most flexible and convenient technology Cisco has to offer.

CAUTION Alw ays remember that each device in your w ireless netw ork MUST use the same

encryption method and encryption key or your w ireless netw ork w ill not function properly.

Additional Security Tips
The follow ing tips can help prevent hackers from gaining access into your w ireless netw ork. · · · Keep w ireless routers, access points, or gatew ays aw ay from exterior w alls and w indow s. Turn w ireless routers, access points, or gatew ays off w hen they are not being used (at night, during vacations). Use strong passphrases that are at least eight characters in length. Combine letters and numbers to avoid using standard w ords that can be found in the dictionary.

Camera Installation Guidelines
Consider the follow ing guidelines before installing and mounting your cameras. While the motion detection w indow and the degree of sensitivity can be optimized later, it is best to optimize your camera location first. · · Choose a location that provides adequate coverage of the area to be monitored. If using the microphone in the camera, note that the cameras are designed to pick up audio from a distance (unlike a w eb camera that you w ould place near you.) If using motion detection, consider potential sources of false positives, such as trees and shrubs, drastic light changes, w andering animals, and traffic. If using an external microphone or speaker, place the microphone far enough aw ay from the speaker to avoid feedback. The volume of the speaker and the background noise of the environment w ill determine the exact distance, possibly up to one yard (one meter) aw ay.
